Back in the days when Audi still made great cars without feeling the need to shout about it, they were producing this 100 Avant (renamed the following year as the A6). It’s a true luxury car with all the comforts you need, big engines and, of course, quattro available if you wanted it.

As you’d expect, there were plenty of electric motors moving things around the cabin, and mine had digital climate control too; still fully operational after ten years.

Certainly more of a cruiser than a back-road tool, the 100 makes long journeys easy. I used mine to tow a motorbike in a box-trailer for about 300-miles in a day, and had to keep reminding myself that I was towing! The 2.6-litre V6 is a great engine, but once again I wish mine was mated to quattro!

I didn’t have my 100 for long, but it certainly earned its keep - the above mentioned motorbike transport plus standing in for a removal van when I moved house (you can get a double mattress in the boot and a sofa strapped to the roof bars!).

Whilst Audi still undoubtedly make good cars, the design seems to have gone almost as brash as BMW and Mercedes; something which people tended to choose Audi to avoid. I for one would be happier driving something from before the current range.
