The Audi 90 (mk2) was based on the same body as the 80, but the different model name denoted the higher specification.
The 90 came with the super-smooth 5-cylinder in-line engine, in this incarnation displacing 2.2-litres with 8 valves. Front-wheel-drive was standard, but quattro four-wheel-drive was also available.
The 90 spec also gave you electric windows all around, central locking, colour coded trim (bumpers, mirrors, door handles etc), spoiler, sunroof, comfier seats and alloy wheels.
It was a very nice car to drive - fast, smooth and comfortable... a bit of a sleeper really. If only I’d been able to find a quattro version for the money...
The 90 was dropped when it came time for a face-lift; you just got an upmarket 80 instead. The 5-cylinder engine didn’t last either, being replaced by a 2.6-litre V6. The body-shape eventually gave way for the A4.
