I'm sure you know how it is; you drive a car for a while, and then you get bored.  Well, I'd been getting bored, so decided to change a few things on the Bug...

Ever since the car was put together, I had thought the front end seemed a bit high. So, after about 3 years I finally decided to fit that lowered front beam I had lying around! This had sway-away adjusters already welded in, and result in a much improved stance.

So, what else would I change?  Well, since the aforementioned drop, I'd felt the front was a bit floppy. So on went a heavy duty Bugpack anti-roll bar. What can I say... Amazing difference!

So I then posted on a VW forum asking for people's experiences with camber-compensators.  The replies I got seemed to suggest I would not regret getting one, and one even offered one for sale. It had never been fitted, and at half the price of a new one on mail order, I thought it would be silly not to.

For those who don't know, this device is essentially a big spring that clamps to each of the drive shafts and fixed at the centre. The idea being it stops one wheel cambering more than the other (or something like that).  Its main purpose is to stop the wheel "tucking under" in hard cornering on a swing axle Bug, which can flip the car.

Anyway, these two products combined really do transform the handling of the car. Okay, it's still not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s an improvement! The main difference I have noticed is that it seems much more stable on the motorway, being less inclined to swap lanes in a side wind.

So, my Bug now corners better... But would some wider tyres (only 155 sections as stock) stop the back end twitching so much?  And it still looks a bit tame.  The tyres would have to be quite a bit wider to help here.  How wide can you go on a stock rim - 165 (any point?), 185?  Then came a better plan...  Banded wheels!  These are widened versions of the standard rim, so wouldn't look out of place, but would have much more presence.

To cut a long story short, here they are, all painted and fitted!
