The Conversion

I wasn’t able to identify the model designation for this camper conversion by Devon Motorcaravans. Even the exhaustive guide book, VW Camper, The Inside Story (David Eccles), doesn’t list a two berth conversion by the company.

The units in this ‘van were in a line down the offside, behind the driver. There was a two-burner gas cooker with grill, sink and various storage cupboards. The rear bench seat folded flat into a double bed as you’d expect.

The units were constructed from plywood, with an oak veneer on the cupboard fronts and a mottled grey veneer for the worktops. Much of the edging strip was damaged or missing when I got the van, but a joiner friend found me some matching iron-on veneer with which I could repair it all.

There was an auxiliary battery fitted in the engine bay, which charged when the engine was running but only supplied a separate circuit of lights and the water pump. I rewired this circuit when I discovered that it totally devoid of overload protection, so took the opportunity to add a small 240v inverter and 12v outlet socket in a rear cupboard.

The pop-top on this van was purely to provide head room to stand in the van. Most conversions had a much longer elevating roof section providing extra accommodation from a pair of child’s bunks to a rigid double bed. The roof included a (colour coordinated!) opening skylight and luckily the canvas was in excellent condition.
