The Van

One thing immediately set this ‘van apart from most campervans - it actually started life as a van, rather than the more usual microbus. A few things gave this away: up front were three seats rather than the more commonplace two plus a gap to walk through to the back; there were sliding doors on both sides; the single colour for all of the bodywork, inside and out - microbus conversions were almost always white with the option of a lower-half respray for the exterior.

The drivetrain for the Type2 follows a similar theory to the Beetle I’m used to - torsion beam front and rear suspension, transaxle at the back with an aircooled flat-four “boxer” engine further back still. In this particular van it was a 1600cc version which remains faithful to the original design, save for the twin inlet ports on each cylinder head. Many of the microbuses of this era came with a substantially redesigned 2000cc engine based on that found in the Type4 and VW-Porsche 914.

Major changes though are the more sophisticated independent rear suspension in place of the swing axles, and disc brakes for the front.
