I’d had a mk2 Golf before, but not a GTi. Everyone says how soft the Golf had come by the mk3, so I was interested to see for myself how the mk2 GTi compared. This car came up locally with no MoT and needing some TLC, so I took it on as a project.
After a few repairs, two new tyres and some tidying up, I took it for the MoT, which it passed after having a small patch welded under the rear arch. I drove it around for a few weeks then moved it on before becoming too attached!
I was impressed by how lively it felt, considering the relatively modest 112bhp from the 1.8-litre 8V engine. I’d certainly like to try out the 16V version of the mk2 with 130bhp!
Mine came with big bumpers; incorrect for the 1986 model but a popular modification. These were all grey but I took the opportunity whilst tidying up some other paintwork to colour code them in Alpine White.
